A Winter WonderlandI went to take the trash out this evening, and the “1-2″ inches of snow that the forecasters had predicted was at least 2-3 inches high, and coming down harder than it had all day. It was dark out, and very nearly past his bedtime, but I decided I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take Simon out for some fun in the snow.

We tromped around for 10 or 15 minutes, just walking and making snowballs. Well, I would make snowballs, then he would have fun throwing them and watching them break. Once I got Simon to the point where he was plenty cold (yet still a couple stages away from frostbite), we gave up for the evening. We were greeted by Kate with a nice warm mug of hot chocolate for Simon and a couple of doughnut holes as his dessert.

As mundane as it sounds, this will be one of my lasting memories from Simon’s childhood. At least, I think it will. You never do know what will stick in this noggin of mine. Here’s hoping I manage to hold onto this one.

Hot Chocolate

I had this in my voice mail at work the other day, and it is REALLY cute. Well, I’m biased, so I’ll let you be the judge. I realize that unless you live with him, listening to a 2 year old speak is like trying to translate Egyptian, so a transcript is below. You can see that we’re successfully brainwashing him in all of life’s most important aspects.

Hi Daddy.
I miss you.
Go Redskins!
Go Os.
Hail to the Redskins.
Bye bye.
Bye bye. (whispered)
BYYYYYYYE BYYYYYYYEEEEE!

Simon had a good time on Halloween. Just give him a listen.

Simon’s 2nd birthday was a couple of weeks ago, and excepting the bloody lip, a good time was had by all. It took me a while before I actually sat down to take the pictures off the camera, but we had a couple turn out really nicely. The photoset is up on Flickr, but you have to be a friend/family to view it. If you’re not my friend, but would like to be, let me know. How condescending does that sound?

Blowing Bubbles with MeeMa and BeeBa

As you can see, Mee-ma and Bee-ba (Simon-speak for Grandma and Grandpa) made it down from New York for the festivities. Simon was fortunate to have gotten over his cold a few days before his birthday, and then wait until a couple days after to catch another bug and ear infection. Hopefully he wasn’t infectious around all the other kids. All in all, it was a good day.

I have had “Hot Potato” stuck in my head all day. And now you can too:

Enjoy!

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted. I’ve been to and from NYC (photos to come if I ever get around to flickring them), crashed a friend’s house in Bowling Green, VA for our Fantasy Football draft, and am about to go on another grand adventure this weekend (Atlanta and Blacksburg in 24 hours). Busy, busy, busy. I bring you what has been observed by several people as being a “cute” picture. Which is funny, because out of the pictures I have recently taken, I don’t think this is one of the better shots. But who am I to argue with Simon’s adoring public? So I must share the cuteness (provided by the boy, not me).

Teaching Him Early

Simon is at that age where the developmental changes are coming fast and furiously. Every day it seems that some other little connection in his brain is being made and he’s putting together something that he hasn’t previously known how to do or say.

When I came home from work yesterday, Kate was very eager for him to show off his latest word – potato. He says ‘tato. It’s very cute. Quite possibly the cutest word that any baby anywhere has ever uttered. I am in no way exaggerating, it really is THAT CUTE. Tomorrow I’ll have to break out the camera and see if I can get it on video to share the cuteness with the Internet so you can all see how completely unbiased I am. Seriously.

The other piece of Simon cuteness this week was at bath time yesterday. He had made it clear to me earlier in the evening that he was very, very excited about his bath.

“Dath, dath,” he says.”Yes, that is a bath,” I reply “but right now it’s time to eat dinner. Come downstairs with me and we’ll eat and THEN you can have your bath.” (I pick him up to take him downstairs).

“WAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!”

This protesting didn’t last to long and dinner was delicious, but relatively uneventful. After dinner, Kate took Simon back upstairs and began to run his bath. I hear a cry of protest and then a shout – “Pat, come look at what your son has done.” I entered to find this scene:

Really Likes His Baths
Not your typical bath time blackmail photo, huh? But there’s no doubt we’ll be showing this one to some girlfriend in the future.

For the last three months I’ve been consistently posting. . . twice per month. This month’s post is for all those folks who miss the weekly Simon picture.

Simon knows three words. Bye, apple, and pizza (go figure). Pronounced “Bah”, “Aaaaa-puh”, and “Peeda”. I figured we should record him saying these first few words for posterity. Normally you can prompt him to say a word here or there, but on this day, he thought otherwise. . .

Incidentally, my camera takes way better video than this. Between editing, saving for the Web and then uploading to Google video the quality has degraded significantly. I need to figure out what settings to use so that it’s not quite so pixelated.
